Weekly blog looking at books, movies, and games through the lens of story
Lost in the Words is a labour of love: A love of reading on rainy Sundays, a love of spending the afternoon at the movies, a love of diving into a new game on Saturday morning and not coming out of it till dark.
And also a love of thinking. About how a writer pulled off a twist that you never saw coming, but looking back you could see the breadcrumbs they left behind leading up to it. Or how a single dramatic moment both cemented and re-framed a romance that spanned multiple films. Or that one game that took a simple mechanic, polished it to perfection, then merged it with a darkly comedic story to craft a masterpiece.
Of course, not every plot twist works. Some relationships never gel on-screen. And simplicity doesn't guarantee success. Creating is hard, but even when the final product doesn't live up to our expectations, there are lessons to be learned, and we can sharpen our own tools by digging into why something doesn't work, or how we could have made it better.
That's the goal. To approach these works out of love and respect for the craft, even when examining their imperfections. And to come away each week with a new tool in the toolbox, or a new way of looking at an old tool, for our own projects.
Subscribing means getting access to the full archive of posts, and new posts delivered right to your inbox.
It's completely free at the moment. Later I might add paid tiers, with some bonus goodies, but the basic posts will remain free to read.
Hope you enjoy, and thanks for reading!
Each week, I'll send out a new post approaching books, movies, or games through the lens of story.
